Cups to grams, by ingredient

Going the other way? 1 cup of flour is 120 g, 1 cup of sugar is 200 g, 1 cup of butter is 227 g. Tell the converter how many cups your recipe uses and it returns the weight to put on the scale.

Precision runs both ways: weighing in grams removes the guesswork of how the cup was filled.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in 1 cup of flour?

120 g for all-purpose flour, spooned and levelled. Bread flour is a little heavier at 127 g per cup and cake flour lighter at 114 g.

How many grams are in 1 cup of sugar?

200 g for granulated sugar. Brown sugar packed into the cup is 220 g, while powdered (icing) sugar is only 120 g per cup — half the weight of granulated.

Is a cup always 240 ml?

The US cup used on this site is 240 ml (the nutrition-label standard, 236.6 ml rounded). A metric cup is 250 ml, about 4% more, so multiply cup amounts by 1.04 for metric recipes.

How many grams is half a cup of butter?

About 113 g — butter is 227 g per cup, and a US stick is exactly half a cup (113 g), which makes butter the easiest ingredient to convert.

Can I convert cups to grams for liquids the same way?

Yes. Liquids convert by density: water is 237 g per cup, milk 240 g, oil 218 g and honey a dense 340 g. The converter handles all of them.

Why does my result differ from another website?

Sites disagree mainly on flour. We use 120 g per cup for all-purpose flour (spooned & levelled), the value used by major baking references. A site using a scooped value like 125–130 g will give slightly smaller cup results.
